WHAT IS SPeech THERAPY?

Speech Therapy is a treatment for communication difficulties performed by a Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs), who are experts in communication. Pediatric SLPs help treat a variety of communication delays and disorders in children from birth to 21 years old.

 

A Speech Language Pathologist works to help your child communicate effectively by assisting with the improvement of their verbal and non-verbal language skills. They also may specialize in assisting with feeding and swallowing difficulties. 

WHAT skills might my child work on in SpEECH TheRAPY?

Common speech concerns treated in speech therapy are:

Articulation (speech sound production)

Receptive Language (understanding/comprehension of language)

Expressive language (oral expression, sign language, or AAC)

Pragmatic Language (social language)

Fluency (stuttering)

Apraxia (motor planning for speech production)

Any Other Developmental Communication Delays

Early identification of any type of communication disorder is essential in the prevention of associated problems within literacy, cognition, and social skills, and is fundamental for continued learning throughout life!

MY CHILD HAS A SPEECH THERAPY REFERRAL, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

Children who receive a referral for Speech Therapy may be struggling and need some additional support in some areas that a provider believes a Speech Language Pathologist can help treat.
